Hyundai Motor has revised its strategy to reclaim the lead in the small-SUV market.
The company has started development on the third-generation Kona, choosing to skip the typical mid-cycle refresh and move directly to a full, ground-up redesign.
That decision signals more than a routine update; Hyundai is signaling a comprehensive rework of the Kona's product attributes and brand positioning.
Reality: Outpaced by the Seltos
Urgent Need to Restore Competitiveness

The Kona's strategy change is driven by intensifying competition.
Group sibling Kia's Seltos has consistently led the domestic market, and while Kona sales have recovered, the model hasn't secured a decisive advantage.
Imported electric SUVs such as the Volvo EX30 have rapidly taken market share, further narrowing Kona's position.
Ultimately, Hyundai appears to have concluded that the existing approach won't be enough to restore competitiveness.
From Design to Platform
Rebuilt from the Ground Up

This full redesign project is more than a cosmetic refresh.
Hyundai has formed a dedicated task force to re-evaluate everything from the initial concept—cost structure, product competitiveness and user experience are all under review.
The company plans to re-engineer the platform, powertrain and digital user experience to deliver what it describes as a “completely different Kona.”
The redesign will also emphasize styling and brand positioning aimed at younger buyers.

Small SUVs are no longer just basic entry models.
They are the strategic segment for spreading EVs and hybrids and provide automakers with the broadest consumer touchpoints.
For Hyundai, the Kona is more than a sales model: it plays a key role in promoting electrification technologies and extending the brand's reach.
Hyundai aims to launch the third-generation Kona in March–April next year, and industry watchers will be watching to see whether the new model can shake up the small-SUV market.
