How to Banish Fruit Flies—Quickly
Summer fruit flies driving you nuts? Prevention is ideal, but once they’re in your kitchen, a simple trap is the fastest fix. Here’s an easy DIY you can make to clear them out.
Prep the Banana Peels

Start by saving some banana peels. Leave bananas at room temp in summer and they quickly attract fruit flies—so the peels are perfect, low-effort bait.

You could use banana flesh, but that feels wasteful—leftover peels work perfectly. Chop them into small pieces so they release more aroma.
Add the Peels to a Plastic Bottle

Use a small plastic bottle—about 500 mL (17 fl oz) works well. Put the chopped banana peels inside.

Cover the bottle opening with plastic wrap. Cut a straw diagonally and poke it through the wrap—leave about 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) sticking out, and push the lower end deep inside. The small, angled opening lets flies enter but makes escape difficult.
Where to Place the Trap and How to Dispose

Set the trap near the sink or wherever fruit flies tend to hang out. After a day or two, you should start seeing them inside.

When the bottle is full of flies, hold it and shake a few times to kill them.

Afterward, remove and discard the banana peels. Don’t leave the trap sitting at room temperature too long—bananas rot fast—so refresh the bait every 2–3 days.
