A West Sea treasure in South Chungcheong Province, sea trout raised at Hongseong's Namdang Port are capturing the attention of springtime food lovers. These fish are freshwater trout that are transferred to the sea for a period, which removes the muddy taste common to river trout. The result is firmer flesh with a clean, nutty flavor. They shine as sashimi, sushi, tempura and in other preparations, making sea trout a sought-after seasonal delicacy.
On April 17, Hongseong County said the sea trout farms in Cheonsuman offer ideal farming conditions: they face minimal typhoon damage, benefit from freshwater inflows that help maintain proper salinity, and sit in nutrient-rich waters. Those natural advantages help the trout resist disease and grow quickly, enabling stable production.
The county has worked to raise the profile of sea trout through Namdang Port–centered festivals, cooking competitions and seafood promotion events, building it into a seafood brand tied to local tourism. With its distinct sea-raised production method and excellent taste, sea trout has become a new signature specialty of Hongseong.
This year, however, the county decided not to hold the sea trout festival due to economic considerations. Restaurants and seafood businesses around Namdang Port say they will nevertheless do their utmost to ensure visitors can taste the seasonal sea trout.
The Namdang Port area also features visitor-friendly attractions such as a splash-friendly marine fountain park, an interactive net-adventure course, a sunset observatory and a sky tower. Tourists can pair the beautiful West Sea views of Cheonsuman with fresh seafood and local bites.
A county official said, “Sea trout raised in Cheonsuman’s clean waters are both delicious and nutritious. We’ll continue promoting sea trout to boost local seafood consumption and energize tourism.”
Hongseong’s sea trout is low in calories, high in protein and rich in DHA, making it a healthy choice for growing children, students and older adults. As an important local resource that can stimulate the regional economy and support healthier eating, ongoing efforts to promote its value will be needed.
