Discover Pocheon Art Valley: A Hidden Gem for Art and Nature Lovers

Imagine sheer granite cliffs rising like a dramatic screen, with an emerald lake quietly rippling beneath them. Pocheon Art Valley, in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, was once a noisy, dust-choked quarry. Granite was quarried here for industrial use from the 1960s until operations stopped in the 1990s, and the site sat unused for a while. The city of Pocheon then reimagined the neglected space with culture and art, turning it into a vibrant mixed-use cultural and arts complex that now attracts over 400,000 visitors a year. Cheonju Lake, tucked between rugged rock faces, formed when groundwater and rain collected in the pits left by quarrying. Its uncanny color has made the lake a favorite filming spot for dramas and movies.

Walk along the lake and you’ll see where raw nature meets thoughtful design. The exposed faces of quarried granite bear the marks of time and create a striking backdrop. The lakeside performance stage and sculpture park host diverse shows and exhibitions, giving visitors plenty to discover. The astronomy science center, opened in 2014, invites guests to observe the night sky and experience the mysteries of space—an educational stop for families and a memorably unusual date for couples. A cheerful yellow monorail helps visitors conquer the steep slope with ease and is one of the site’s signature touches.

Pocheon Art Valley’s hours change by day. From Monday through Friday, and on Sundays and public holidays, it’s open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last admission 5:00 PM). On Saturdays hours are extended—9:00 AM to 10:00 PM (last admission 8:00 PM). The facility is closed on the first Tuesday of every month, so check the schedule before you go.

Admission for non-resident adults is KRW 6,000 (≈ $4.50). Youths and military personnel pay KRW 4,000 (≈ $3.00), children pay KRW 2,000 (≈ $1.50), and seniors 65 and older pay KRW 3,000 (≈ $2.25). Residents of Pocheon enter free with valid ID. Visitors with disabilities, recipients of national honors, and preschool children also receive free admission. Where towering vertical cliffs meet a tranquil lake, Pocheon Art Valley stands as a standout example of an industrial site reborn as a cultural and arts destination.
