Investigators identify a 5 m (16.4 ft)‑wide, 7 m (23.0 ft)‑deep hull breach
The government announced on May 10 that an external impact caused the fire aboard the HMM Namoo, which had been anchored in the Strait of Hormuz. The Foreign Ministry said a joint government investigation team inspected the site on May 8 and determined that an unidentified aerial object struck the ship’s stern on May 4.
Officials said the damage resulted from an unidentified flying object, not from an underwater drone or a floating mine. They added that further investigation is needed to determine whether the object was a drone or a missile.
The strike left a breach about 5 m (16.4 ft) wide and 7 m (23.0 ft) deep in the Namoo’s hull. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il said internal frames were bent inward while the outer hull plating buckled and protruded outward. He said the object appears on closed‑circuit TV, but the footage does not allow investigators to identify the launcher, the exact model, or the object’s precise size. Officials plan additional analysis of engine debris recovered at the scene.
The ministry stopped short of naming an attacker. When asked whether Iran was responsible, the Foreign Ministry said it would not presume the identity of the attacker.
