Middle East Tensions: 70 Korean Power Engineers Remain in UAE Amid Crisis

As Iran publicly discussed potential airstrike targets, including power plants in the United Arab Emirates, about 70 employees from Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) — who are involved in ongoing construction and commissioning work at the Barakah nuclear plant — remain in the area.

Industry sources said on March 23 that roughly 50 KEPCO employees and 20 KHNP employees are staying in Abu Dhabi and near the Barakah nuclear power plant.

When family members of employees and contractor staff are included, the group is estimated to number at least 130 people.

KEPCO elevated its crisis alert to the "caution" level as tensions in the Middle East intensified. KHNP has activated its emergency response headquarters to monitor local conditions and safeguard personnel, the companies said.
