U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he is weighing a range of military options to strengthen the United States’ leverage in negotiations with Iran.
Rubio told ABC News on March 30 (local time) that he has been in contact with Iranian figures and warned the talks could fail. He said Tehran has signaled it might try to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz and has even floated dangerous measures such as imposing transit fees. “We will never tolerate that,” he said.
He added that President Donald Trump would employ a range of options, if necessary, to prevent a worst-case outcome, but declined to specify which measures were under consideration.
Earlier, President Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that discussions were underway to end military operations against Iran. He warned, “We’ve made significant progress but haven’t reached an agreement. If they don’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz, we will blow up power plants, oil fields and Kharg Island.”
