HMM Namooho Arrives in Dubai: What Caused the Recent Explosion?

Kim Sun-hong | 2026.05.09

[Anchor] The HMM Namoo — the ship that suffered an explosion and subsequent fire in the Strait of Hormuz — has arrived at Dubai Port in the United Arab Emirates. We obtained exclusive footage of the vessel as it docked at a repair facility. Our correspondent on the scene has more. Kim Seon-hong, what can you tell us? [Reporter] I’m reporting from Dubai. Behind me is Drydocks World Dubai, the Middle East’s largest ship-repair facility. In the inner basin of the port, the HMM Namoo is berthed and the HMM markings on its hull are clearly visible. Other ships are partially blocking the view, so it’s too early to assess the extent of any external damage, but the Namoo appears to have docked safely. Repairs began five days after the explosion and fire in the Strait of Hormuz, and a formal investigation started today. A government probe team — including three investigators from the Central Maritime Safety Tribunal and four forensic specialists from the National Fire Agency — has been deployed. Investigators will focus on whether the blaze was caused by an external attack, such as one tied to Iran, or by an internal fault aboard the ship. Views inside Iran are split: Iran’s foreign ministry and its embassy in Seoul have said the Namoo incident “has nothing to do with Iran,” while Iranian state media have claimed the vessel — which they allege violated maritime rules — was “targeted.” South Korea’s foreign ministry has urged caution, saying authorities must establish the facts and determine the cause, and that officials will concentrate on the investigation. Officials have not yet decided whether the Namoo’s 24 crew members will disembark during repairs; that will depend on the length and scope of the work.
