Chungnam Province has launched a coordinated drive to win a Defense Innovation Cluster designation, teaming with lawmakers, global defense contractors and research institutes.
On March 24, the province said it signed a memorandum of understanding at the National Assembly with Rep. Hwang Myeong-seon, Nonsan City, Hanwha Aerospace, Hyundai Rotem, LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the Chungnam Research Institute and Chungnam Technopark, among others.
The pact is intended to strengthen K‑defense competitiveness, expand Chungnam’s defense industrial base and mount a joint bid for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration’s 2026 Defense Innovation Cluster competition.
Under the agreement, participants will cooperate on defense R&D and commercialization support, foster partnerships between system integrators and small and venture firms, develop talent, create jobs, build testing and demonstration infrastructure, and jointly pursue national project opportunities.
Chungnam plans to invest 49.9 billion KRW (approximately $37.4 million) by 2030 to establish an AI defense‑robotics cluster in the Naedong and Yeonmu‑eup areas of Nonsan, and it will submit its project proposal by the end of the month.
Observers say Nonsan has strong locational advantages thanks to its talent base — including the Korea National Defense University and Konyang University — its proximity to the Agency for Defense Development and the Daedeok Research Complex in Daejeon, and plans for a Defense Future Technology Research Center and a national defense industrial park.
A provincial official said the province will build the country’s largest demonstration testbed and develop Nonsan into a hub for the AI defense‑robotics industry.
