On March 22, the production posted on its official social channels that, despite the company's best efforts to continue performances, circumstances proved more challenging than anticipated. For business reasons, the run was cut short, with the March 19 (Thursday) performance designated as the final show.
The statement added: \"We deeply regret the hardship this decision has caused the cast, crew and all others involved. The production company will assume responsibility and handle all related matters in good faith.\"
'Eyes of Dawn' is adapted from the MBC drama of the same name, which aired from 1991–1992. The musical chronicles Korean experiences during Japan's Pacific War. It premiered at the Dongjak Parking Park Converse Stage Arena (Yeomyeong) on Dec. 2 and ran through Jan. 31. Although an extension had been planned, the production closed early.
Industry sources say several cast members staged a boycott ahead of the planned extension, protesting unpaid fees. Payment amounts varied by role, but on average the company reportedly paid 80% of contracted fees, withholding the remaining 20%. The parties have yet to reach an agreement.
According to sources, many performers continued to appear onstage to keep the production going despite outstanding pay. They pressed for contractually owed compensation, but the dispute remained unresolved.
A performance scheduled for March 8 was also canceled due to internal issues at the production company. At the time, producer Next Sketch acknowledged full responsibility and issued a formal apology.
On March 11, Baek Sung-hyun, who plays lead Choi Dae-chi, said: \"As one of the principal actors in the musical, I feel a heavy responsibility for the current disruption. This situation stems from structural issues between the production company and the cast, and I ask the public to understand the hardships faced by colleagues who were forced to make difficult decisions to defend their rightful claims.\"
Meanwhile, Xportsnews reported on March 23 that approximately 40 to 50 cast and crew members plan to release a joint statement concerning the producer's alleged contract breaches. They are also considering more assertive measures, including a press conference, if necessary.
Given that the original 'Eyes of Dawn' drama achieved a peak viewership rating of 58.4% and remains an enduring classic, the unpaid-fees dispute and the production's premature closure are all the more disheartening.
