[Sports Seoul | By Wi Soo-jeong] Comedian Cho Hye-ryeon offered an update on her son Woo-joo, who has moved to Australia, and recounted the moment she cut up his "mom card" — a story that drew both laughter and tears.
In a video posted May 1 on the YouTube channel WowSanTV, Cho shared a tender exchange with her son that revealed how close they remain. "Woo-joo has changed a lot," she said, recalling the day he was leaving for Europe. "At the front door, he left letters for my husband and me."
In the letter, Cho said, her son wrote, "I admire my mother's passion and energy." He even addressed the man he usually called "ajusshi" as "father," adding, "Because of you, I was able to live the right way." Cho said the letter moved her to tears.
She added that she promised to always stand by Woo-joo when he faces hardship. "That's all a parent can do," she said, a remark that resonated with viewers.
Woo-joo is now in Sydney on a working-holiday visa, starting a new chapter. Cho noted the bleak job market at home: "It's so hard to find work in Korea," she said, adding that it made her think about how difficult things are for young people today.
The episode also included a lighter moment about the "mom card." Cho said she cut up the card in front of her son when he left and gave him Australian dollars instead. A few days into his stay, he called and complained, "It's really inconvenient without the mom card. Can't you make another one?" Cho laughed and responded, "Are you kidding? The mom card is finished."
Previously, Cho said her son had applied to about 40 jobs amid the hiring slump and was rejected by all of them — a reality she described as heartbreaking. She said she supports his decision to take a working holiday and root for him as he pursues this new challenge. wsj0114@sportsseoul.com
