Army Chief of Staff Gen. Kim Gyu-ha visited Camp Carroll in Chilgok County, North Gyeongsang Province, on March 16, 2026, alongside U.S. Eighth Army commander Lt. Gen. Joseph Hilbert to inspect the joint ROK-U.S. exercise Freedom Shield (FS). They toured the U.S. Army's APS-4 materiel storage and management facility and assessed the allies' combined defense posture and sustainment capabilities.
Gen. Kim and Lt. Gen. Hilbert reviewed APS-4 operations and discussed measures to enhance cooperation, accelerate the deployment of combined forces and strengthen sustainment during contingency operations.
Gen. Kim said, "The ROK-U.S. alliance and our combined defense posture are the backbone of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Sustainment capability is a decisive factor in modern warfare. Through this on-site inspection, we will further advance the combined force's sustainment capabilities."
Lt. Gen. Hilbert said, "The equipment stored at this facility is not merely supplies; it is a concrete demonstration of our commitment to defending the Republic of Korea. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our South Korean allies and remain ready to fight today. We will continue to develop these capabilities to meet any future challenges."
