On the 4th (local time), Fars News Agency reported that a U.S. Navy escort vessel attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz was struck by two missiles fired by Iranian forces in the Gulf of Oman and subsequently withdrew. Fars, citing local sources in southern Iran, said the U.S. escort ship attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz near Jask in southeastern Iran in violation of navigation and shipping regulations. Jask is a port city on the Gulf of Oman, east of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, the U.S. vessel ignored warnings from the Iranian navy and pressed on; it was immediately targeted by missile fire. The ship was hit by two missiles, could not continue its transit, and reversed course to withdraw.
Iran’s state broadcaster, citing the military’s public affairs office, said Iranian forces’ swift and decisive warning thwarted attempts by U.S. Navy destroyers to enter the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier that morning, U.S. forces launched "Project Freedom," an operation to escort civilian vessels trapped in the Gulf (Persian Gulf) through the Strait of Hormuz using warships.
