Nammaeji, tucked beside Gyeongsan City Hall in North Gyeongsang Province, is a beloved urban oasis where locals unwind by calm waters. The name Nammaeji comes from a poignant Joseon-era tale about a poor brother and sister: the brother left for Hanyang (now Seoul) to repay their father's debts, and the sister—left alone and threatened by a debt collector—threw herself into the reservoir. The brother, discovering it too late, followed. Over time, that heartbreaking story became the reservoir's namesake, and today Nammaeji is a quiet retreat woven into residents' everyday lives.

The roughly 2.5 km (about 1.6 miles) waterfront trail separates pedestrian and bicycle lanes so everyone can enjoy a stroll or ride without getting in each other's way. Walk close to the water and you’ll find a lotus greenhouse and an observation learning center; seasonal aquatic blooms bring the place to life. Scattered through the park are fitness stations, a bike track, and a waterside plaza—perfect for mixing movement with downtime. One charming highlight is the “Slow Mailbox,” a small, thoughtful installation that nudges visitors to appreciate the value of waiting in our always-on world.

In March, cherry blossoms along the trail lend a dreamy spring vibe. As winter loosens its grip, locals flock here for walks and casual outings. In summer, a children's splash park and ground fountains turn the area into a downtown cool-down spot. It’s not huge, but the water-play features attract many families. At night, Nammaeji shifts mood: multicolored lights line the waterfront deck, and a music fountain in the lake puts on a show for evening strollers.

Nammaeji is open year‑round with no admission fee, so you can drop by for a walk or some quiet time whenever you like. Blending historical legend with contemporary leisure, it remains one of Gyeongsan’s most cherished waterfront parks. When you’re craving fresh air and gentle ripples, the Nammaeji trail offers a soothing, warmly inviting escape.
