Spring travel is in full swing, and as airports get busier, many of us toss wet wipes into our carry-ons to keep our seats clean. But microbiologists warn that your own belongings might actually be the main culprits spreading bacteria.

JR Pass, a Japanese rail-pass company, teamed up with microbiologists to swab travel essentials—passports, carry-on bags, checked luggage, shoes, coats, and cell phones. Passports came back with the highest bacterial counts: 436 CFU (colony-forming units), about seven times more than shoes. CFU measures the number of bacteria that grow when cultured.
Passports pick up germs because they’re handled by many people—owners, airline staff, and security officers. Microbiologist Dr. Jason Tetro noted that passport paper and covers are made to be durable, and that toughness can create surfaces where bacteria are more likely to thrive.
JR Pass recommends five simple ways to reduce bacterial spread while traveling. First: wash your hands often. Airports and public transit are high-contact spaces—check-in kiosks, railings, and luggage handles can easily transfer bacteria to your hands. Soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer work well.
Second: wipe down your passport and phone regularly. Items you touch repeatedly tend to collect bacteria from your hands and from surfaces. Using disinfectant wipes on passport covers, phone screens, and luggage handles can cut contamination.
Third: change out of your travel clothes as soon as you get home. Clothing naturally picks up microbes from your skin and the environment, so swapping into fresh clothes and laundering travel-worn items right away helps stop germs from spreading through your home.
Fourth: take your shoes off at the door. Bacteria and mold picked up while traveling can be tracked indoors. Fifth: wipe the outside of your luggage before storing it. Since suitcases and carry-ons touch airport floors, conveyor belts, and shared surfaces, a quick clean can significantly reduce the number of germs you bring inside.
