Mapo District announced on the 10th that Mangwon Market, a traditional marketplace, has been selected as a final site for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization’s K-Tourism Market Phase 2 program.

K-Tourism Market pairs regional traditional markets with tourism-focused programming to turn them into must-visit spots for both domestic and international travelers.

For this second round, evaluators reviewed local governments across the country, judging markets on their unique appeal, tourism-content strength, potential to link with nearby attractions, and prospects for international growth. Eleven markets across ten regions were chosen.

Selected markets will receive tailored support: helping to develop signature food and hands-on experiences, creating tourism programs tied to nearby attractions, and boosting domestic and international promotion and marketing.

Mangwon Market stood out for its visitor-friendly infrastructure, abundant K-food options, and strong ties to the local business community.

With an array of street eats, standout shops, and a youthful energy, the market has become a go-to K-food destination that resonates with Gen Z and Millennial travelers.

Its location—next to Red Road and Mangridan-gil and within easy reach of Mangwon Hangang Park and the Seoul Battleship Park—makes it an easy add-on to a day of sightseeing.

Mapo District plans to position Mangwon Market as more than a shopping spot: the goal is a stay-and-play destination where food, experiences, and festivals keep visitors lingering.

To make the market more inviting, the district will upgrade visitor-friendly features such as decorative lighting and seating areas, and expand experiential programs that blend local culture with K-food.

As part of this year’s facility modernization, officials will also repair the market arcade to create a safer, more comfortable shopping environment.

Park Kang-su, the Mapo District mayor, said, "I hope Mangwon Market’s diverse food scene and tourism offerings, combined with the K-Tourism Market program, will help it grow into a top destination for both domestic and international visitors. We’ll do everything we can to strengthen its standing as Mapo’s flagship traditional market."
