U.S. Forces Korea appears set to transfer interceptor missiles from its THAAD battery in South Korea to the Middle East.
On the morning of March 3, reports said six THAAD launcher vehicles that had been moved from the Seongju site to Osan delivered their interceptor missiles at Osan and then returned to Seongju without the missiles.
With each launcher carrying eight interceptors, that would put the total at up to 48 missiles moved to Osan.
Those interceptors could soon be loaded onto large U.S. transport aircraft such as the C-5 Galaxy and flown to the Middle East.
South Korea hosts a single THAAD battery — six launchers — based at Seongju.
Analysts say that even if the interceptor missiles are shipped to the Middle East, the launchers and radar would remain at Seongju, allowing the system to continue operating without major disruption.
