Japan said it could deploy its Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz if hostilities between the United States and Iran cease.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told Fuji TV on March 22 that Japan’s mine-countermeasure technology is among the world’s best. He said if a cease-fire left mines blocking navigation in the strait, Tokyo would consider deploying the SDF to address the threat.
Motegi, who attended the U.S.-Japan summit, said President Donald Trump nodded when Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi explained that legal limits restrict overseas troop deployments.
Separately, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said one of two Japanese nationals detained by Iranian authorities has been released.
