Israeli officials say the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, who led operations to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, was killed in an airstrike.

On March 26 (local time), Israeli media outlets including the Times of Israel quoted an Israeli government official saying IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri was killed in an airstrike on Bandar Abbas, the southern Iranian port city on the Strait of Hormuz.

The official said Tangsiri was responsible for overseeing the blockade and control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments.

Neither the Israeli nor Iranian militaries have issued an official statement.

A brigadier general, Tangsiri was appointed IRGC Navy commander in 2018. Analysts credit him with modernizing fast-attack craft, naval mines, anti-ship missile systems and unmanned surface vessels (drone boats).
