Local outlets, including the Times of Israel, reported on March 26 that an Israeli airstrike killed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ naval commander, who had effectively led the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
An Israeli government official told reporters that Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, was struck in an attack on Bandar Abbas, the Iranian port city on the Strait of Hormuz.
The official said Tangsiri oversaw the blockade and control of the strait.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the strike and said it killed Tangsiri.
Speaking at a morning operational briefing with senior military leaders, Defense Minister Katz said the Israel Defense Forces had killed Alireza Tangsiri, the IRGC Navy commander.
Tangsiri held the rank of brigadier general and was appointed commander of the IRGC Navy in 2018. Analysts credit him with modernizing Iran’s fast-attack boats, mine warfare and anti-ship missile forces, and with expanding its unmanned “drone boat” capabilities.
