Christopher Rando, the U.S. State Department deputy secretary, said negotiating a cease-fire with Iran is challenging. He said it remains unclear how far any agreement would stretch and which forces on which battlefields it would cover.
On April 9 (local time), Rando told a discussion hosted by the Atlantic Council, "We are working toward a durable and effective cease-fire."
His comments appeared to refer to Israel's ongoing strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, a militia backed by Iran.
Rando said the United States is still negotiating with Iran to finalize the cease-fire's scope. He added that the U.S. believes it has effectively achieved the military objectives it set at the start of the war.
