A hardline conservative Iranian outlet has drawn attention by laying out nine preconditions for negotiating a ceasefire with the United States.
A former member of Iran’s parliament, the Majlis, set out the demands in an opinion column for the daily Kayhan.
At the core are a full U.S. military withdrawal from the Middle East, the dismantling of U.S. bases, and a plan to charge transit fees to ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Specifically, the nine demands are ▲ complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Middle East and dismantling of U.S. bases ▲ establishing a system to charge transit fees for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz ▲ a pledge of non-aggression toward the “Axis of Resistance” in countries such as Iraq and Lebanon ▲ lifting U.S. and U.N. sanctions on Iran ▲ unfreezing and returning Iranian assets ▲ the U.S. and Israel acknowledging past incursions and providing compensation ▲ the UAE withdrawing territorial claims to three islands ▲ a permanent halt to war and terrorism ▲ and a ceasefire agreement grounded in mutual deterrence.
The demands came after a U.S. ceasefire proposal that included dismantling some nuclear facilities and banning uranium enrichment. Analysts say the gap between the two sides remains large.
