France’s CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container carrier, said one of its vessels was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on the afternoon of May 5 local time. In a statement issued May 6, the company said the ship San Antonio was struck, suffering damage, and several crew members were injured. The wounded crew were evacuated and are receiving medical care. CMA CGM did not name the attacker, but initial reports indicate the vessel was hit by an Iranian missile. On May 5, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy posted on X (formerly Twitter) that all ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz must follow Iran-designated routes, warning that vessels that fail to comply could face military action. The IRGC command accused U.S. forces of taking "dangerous actions that disrupt maritime order and security," saying those actions threatened navigation safety in the Strait and damaged some merchant ships, tankers and fishing vessels in the area.
