On March 14, the People Power Party issued a strong condemnation of North Korea’s ballistic missile launches, saying they constitute acts that threaten security on the Korean Peninsula.

In a statement, party spokesperson Cho Yong-sul said North Korea fired roughly 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea, once again carrying out a military provocation that jeopardizes peace on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia. He called the launches a clear provocation that flagrantly ignored repeated international warnings and U.N. sanctions.

Cho said it is highly unusual for North Korea to launch about 10 ballistic missiles in a single salvo. He added that carrying out the launches immediately after the United States signaled a willingness to engage in dialogue is a brazen challenge to international diplomatic efforts and shows that Pyongyang is choosing provocation over talks.

He accused the administration of President Lee Jae-myung of failing to respond forcefully to North Korea’s blatant military provocations, criticizing the government for maintaining a largely passive approach and leaving the situation unchecked.

Cho urged the government and the military to step up surveillance and vigilance, relying on the ROK-U.S. alliance to prepare for possible additional provocations. He said Seoul must demonstrate to the international community a firm condemnation and a clear willingness to respond that will not tolerate further illegal acts.

He added that the most important step is to deepen cooperation with the international community so North Korea understands it will gain nothing from unlawful military provocations.
