[MyDaily = Reporter Kwak Myung-dong] Ted Turner, the media entrepreneur who founded CNN—the world’s first 24-hour cable news network—has died at 87. His ex-wife, actress Jane Fonda, 88, posted a heartfelt tribute.
CNN reported on the 6th (local time) that Turner died peacefully at his home in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by family. He was diagnosed in 2018 with progressive Lewy body dementia and reportedly battled pneumonia last year.
Jane Fonda, who was married to Turner from 1991 to 2001, wrote on social media: “My first memories of Ted. He arrived in my life like an adventurous pirate — handsome and deeply romantic. After I met him, my life could never be the same.”
She added, “He was never an ordinary man. He founded CNN and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and was a world-class yachtsman who won the America’s Cup. He led a rich life and combined sharp intelligence with a delightful sense of humor.”
Fonda went on to say, “He gave me confidence, and I believe I gave him the same strength.” She recalled that Turner, a former television producer, taught her many things — from hunting to business strategy — and remembered him as the most competitive person she had met since Katharine Hepburn.
“Ted was always a challenger, and I always enjoyed those challenges,” she wrote, expressing deep respect and affection. “The challenges I shared with Ted were almost always worth it.”
