Actors and viewers are still debating Park Sung-hoon’s comeback choice after his social media controversy, with many saying the role hasn’t generated the rebound his team had hoped for. He stirred controversy when he posted explicit content to his personal Instagram Story in December 2024. About a year later he returned in a romance series, but both ratings and buzz have been underwhelming, and public response has been chilly.

JTBC’s weekend drama Efficient Meetings of Singles premiered on Feb. 28. The romance, which explores marriage, dating and realistic human relationships, stars Han Ji-min and Park Sung-hoon. Casting news sparked debate before the show aired because viewers viewed Park’s role as central to his comeback. So far, the series’ performance has been lukewarm.

Park’s public image took a hit when he posted explicit material to his personal social media in December 2024. He subsequently exited the planned tvN series The Tyrant’s Chef. The scandal surfaced just as he seemed poised for a career peak following high-profile appearances in Netflix hits The Glory and Squid Game, forcing a change in his plans.

Aside from his already-filmed role in Squid Game 2, Park’s first project after the controversy was Efficient Meetings of Singles. Because he was paired opposite Han Ji-min—an actress with strong recognition and high favorability—netizens immediately questioned why his comeback would be a romance, arguing the choice was risky.

That the two leads belong to the same agency, BH Entertainment, added another layer to the conversation. Han Ji-min earned praise last year for her romantic pairing with Lee Jun-hyuk in SBS’s My Perfect Secretary. When news broke that her next project would be a romance with Park Sung-hoon, some viewers expressed disappointment. Critics also argued that Han might bear unnecessary baggage as a fellow agency artist, and the casting itself became a point of contention.

Promotion also diverged from the usual playbook. Unlike many dramas that boost exposure with joint variety-show appearances by the leads, Han Ji-min and Park Sung-hoon did not appear together on variety programs. Han instead appeared on the web variety show Pinggyego with agency colleagues Han Hyo-joo and Park Bo-young, seeking buzz without being paired with Park.

Ratings haven’t shown meaningful growth. Efficient Meetings of Singles debuted at 3.1% and has hovered between 3% and 4% through episode eight. The series airs at 10:40 p.m. on weekend nights—a slot with relatively little direct competition—but it has yet to deliver standout moments.

Buzz metrics tell a similar story. Good Data Corporation’s Fundex ranking for the third week of March omits Park Sung-hoon. Ju Ji-hoon tops the list for ENA’s Climax, while Yoo Yeon-seok ranks fourth, Ha Jung-woo seventh and Seo In-guk eighth. Byun Woo-seok, from the yet-to-air MBC drama 21st Century Great General’s Wife, sits at sixth—underscoring Park’s muted presence.

Critical reaction to the series itself has been mixed. Some viewers say the dialogue and direction feel dated, and they argue the show’s portrayal of single women in their 30s is out of step with contemporary sensibilities. Those criticisms, along with comments that Park’s presence disrupts immersion, have cooled overall reception.

Even before the show aired, many questioned whether a romance was the right comeback vehicle for Park. Now that the series hasn’t shifted the conversation, those concerns appear validated to many viewers. The drama still has time to turn things around as it moves into its middle episodes, but based on current trends, critics say Park’s first project back has not delivered the impact fans and producers expected.

Because romantic dramas depend heavily on audience sympathy for the leads and immersion in their characters, Park’s casting has not yet translated into strong ratings or buzz. The sustained 3%–4% ratings and his absence from buzz rankings point to a limited effect so far.
