[Sports Seoul | Reporter Park Jun-beom] The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee hosted the first International Competition Observer Program of 2026.

The two-day program took place in Incheon on April 30–May 1.

The Observer Program allows officials from sports federations, local governments and related agencies to attend domestic international events as observers. Participants attended briefings on event planning and operations and took facility and on-site tours to gain practical, hands-on knowledge. Similar programs are run by many international sports organizations to improve event delivery, and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee has staged this program annually since 2020 to build its international capacity.

This edition was held in conjunction with the 2026 Incheon Men’s and Women’s Sabre International Grand Prix Fencing Championships. The Korea Fencing Federation provided an overview of the event and presented a venue-change case study with concrete operational takeaways, while the Incheon Sports Council shared frontline experience from bidding to staging international competitions to deepen participants’ understanding. With the fencing federation’s cooperation, attendees also participated in operations-focused site tours.

To strengthen links between the two pillars of hosting—sports bodies and local governments—the program featured organization spotlight presentations, group work on SNS-based promotion case studies and networking sessions to encourage information sharing and expand collaborative networks.

About 45 people attended, including representatives from member sport federations, provincial sports councils, local governments and the 2027 Chungcheong Summer Universiade Organizing Committee, drawing strong interest and positive feedback.

Funded by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, the Observer Program aims to boost the bidding and hosting capabilities of sports organizations, local governments and partner agencies. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee said it will continue expanding cooperation and strengthening those capacities. beom2@sportsseoul.com
