[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for March–April, the MLB office announced on May 5 (Korean time).

The two-way superstar earned the honor for the first time since his major-league debut in 2018.

Before Ohtani, only five Japanese pitchers had taken home Pitcher of the Month: Hideo Nomo, Hideki Irabu, Masahiro Tanaka, Yu Darvish and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Ohtani made five starts from March through April, logging 30 innings with 34 strikeouts and an eye-popping 0.60 ERA. He allowed just four runs — only two of them earned.

In the American League, José Soriano of the Los Angeles Angels won the award. Soriano made seven starts, worked 42.2 innings, allowed four runs and posted a 0.84 ERA with 49 strikeouts.

The Players of the Month were Ildemaro Vargas of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL and Yordan Álvarez of the Houston Astros in the AL.

Vargas hit .378 with a 1.087 OPS, six home runs and 20 RBIs. Álvarez slashed .356/.?/.? with a 1.199 OPS, delivering 12 homers and 27 RBIs during the stretch.

The Relievers of the Month were Mason Miller of the San Diego Padres (NL) and Louie Valland of the Toronto Blue Jays (AL).

Rookies of the Month honors went to Sal Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds and Kevin McGonigle of the Detroit Tigers.
