Space Yeon delivered messages of love and consolation through a variety of musical genres at its 16th regular concert, 'We Are~ma.'
The concert opened at 7:30 p.m. on the 12th at the Daejeon Arts Center Art Hall. The program centered on \"ma,\" a recurring sonic pause or resonance in music. Organizers threaded opera, musical theater, Korean art songs and film scores into a single program to examine how \"ma\" conveys different emotions in each work.
Soprano Lee Yeon-ja opened with \"A Kiss.\" The program then moved into a dramatic sequence that included Verdi's \"La donna è mobile\" from Rigoletto, \"Di Provenza il mar, il suol,\" selections from the Korean musical \"Empress Myeongseong\" including \"If I Go,\" and the aria \"Burn Me\" from the opera \"Yi Sun-shin.\"
Midway through the concert, the Youth Dream Orchestra performed \"Mother of Mine,\" \"You Who Give Me Happiness,\" and \"The River in My Heart,\" underscoring themes of family and love. Caccini's \"Ave Maria,\" presented by soprano Lee, the SY Ensemble and accompanying media art, married music and visuals and drew strong audience response.
The second half shifted to lighter fare with the Papageno–Papagena duet from Mozart's The Magic Flute, Bernstein's \"Glitter and Be Gay\" from Candide, and the \"Toast Song.\" For the finale, the Western Cultural Center Open Orchestra joined the stage to play medleys from the Mamma Mia and Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks, closing the evening on an upbeat note.
Space Yeon said, \"We aimed to express the wide range of emotions and resonances contained in the single syllable 'ma' through music,\" and added, \"We hope the audience leaves with warm memories that last.\"{vi19}
