Ted Turner, the businessman who founded the U.S. cable news channel CNN, has died. He was 87. CNN said on May 6 (local time) that Turner died with family members at his side. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he entered the media business at 24 when he began running the large outdoor advertising firm Turner Outdoor Advertising. In 1970 he expanded into broadcasting by acquiring Atlanta’s Channel 17. In 1976 he converted Channel 17 into a satellite broadcaster, extending its reach to cable subscribers nationwide and creating one of the earliest nationwide cable “superstations.”
In June 1980 he launched CNN, the world’s first 24-hour news channel. He introduced CNN2 (now Headline News) in 1982 and CNN International, which broadcasts worldwide, in 1985. He also built several cable networks, including Turner Network Television and Cartoon Network. The 24-hour news model drew particular attention during the 1990 Gulf War. In 1996 he sold his network business to Time Warner for 7.5 billion USD (about 11 trillion KRW). He later served as a vice chairman at Time Warner and oversaw its cable news operations before stepping down in 2003.
