MBC's 21st Century Great General's Wife: IU and Byeon Woo-seok
[TV Daily reporter Hwang Seo-yeon] IU and Byeon Woo-seok bring electric chemistry to MBC's new Friday–Saturday drama 21st Century Great General's Wife.

The leads of the series, written by Yoo Ji-won and directed by Park Jun-hwa, which premieres on the 10th, discussed the key dynamics of their characters and how they developed their on-screen rapport.

In the drama, Seong Hee-joo (IU) appears to have it all but carries the stigma of being an illegitimate child and a commoner. Lee An, the prince (Byeon Woo-seok), is the king's son who has lived hidden and deprived of any true claim to power. To try to change their fates, the two enter a marriage of convenience.

IU described their relationship as \"each other's savior,\" while Byeon called it \"inseparable,\" signaling a bond that nothing can break. Their pairing promises a romance in which Seong He-joo and Prince Lee An rescue one another.

Viewers are also eager to see the actors' chemistry on screen. IU said the two briefly crossed paths on a project about a decade ago, but this is their first time acting as true partners. \"From the first read-through I felt comfortable,\" she said. \"On set we exchanged ideas, encouraged one another, and built our chemistry together,\" she added, praising their strong teamwork.

Byeon echoed the sentiment: \"IU and the entire staff showed me a lot of consideration and support during filming, which really helped our chemistry,\" he said, hinting at a warm atmosphere on set.

The pair's mutual trust, thoughtful collaboration, and creative input make the story of Seong Hee-joo and Prince Lee An all the more anticipated.

Set in a 21st-century, constitutional-monarchy version of South Korea, 21st Century Great General's Wife centers on a wealthy woman who chafes at her commoner status and a sorrowful prince who seems to have nothing. Together they challenge fate and the social order in a romance about breaking barriers. The series premieres tonight at 9:40 p.m. KST.
