[Anchor] Workers in Boseong, South Jeolla, are right in the middle of the first tea harvest. Against a backdrop of lush tea fields, the Boseong Tea Fragrance Festival runs through the Family Month holiday weekend. This year’s spotlight is on the increasingly popular “Boseong matcha,” featured in a range of creative foods and drinks. Kim Kyung-in reports. [Reporter] Tea terraces cascade down the steep slopes like a set of green steps, their fresh spring color intensified by warm sunlight. Harvesters move along the rows, carefully picking only the tiny, thin new shoots—so small they’re said to be “sparrow-tongue” size—by hand. Known as Korea’s green tea capital, Boseong is buzzing with first-flush activity. Leaves picked from mid-April through the end of the month are prized as top grade for their soft aroma and rich umami. This year’s harvest looks healthy, with no cold-damage reported. 「Chae Young-chu / CEO, Daecha Farm」 “Boseong tea preserves traditional flavors and processing methods, so the taste is outstanding.” Boseong’s tea farms span 800㏊ (about 1,977 acres), producing roughly 7,500 t (about 8,267 short tons) of tea annually. The 49th Boseong Tea Fragrance Festival takes place around the Korea Tea Culture Park. Visitors can roast freshly picked leaves themselves and sample a variety of tea-inspired dishes. The festival also hosts tea parties in the fields, where guests can savor Boseong’s signature teas alongside desserts. This year’s festival centers on Boseong matcha to attract younger crowds and international tourists. 「Joo Nak-chun / Boseong County Culture and Tourism Office」 “We set up a dedicated matcha zone this year, with matcha-themed drinks and a variety of baked goods. We hope everyone enjoys the food and activities.” Alongside the tea festival, the Seopyeonje Boseong Sound Festival and Mount Ilrim azalea cultural events are also taking place.
