On the 10th, Incheon City convened the Cruise Industry Development Committee. Working with partners like the Incheon Port Authority (IPA) and the Korea Tourism Organization, officials agreed to expand the free shuttle bus service that links the cruise terminal with major attractions such as the Sangsang Platform and Songdo.

About 200,000 cruise passengers (133 ship calls) are expected to visit Incheon this year.

Academics, government officials and industry experts attended the meeting and held in-depth discussions on Incheon’s second five-year cruise industry development plan (2026–2030) and this year’s initiatives to boost cruise activity.

The conversation focused on upgrading tourism infrastructure and improving visitor amenities to better accommodate the growing number of cruise passengers.

With more ships using home ports and scheduling overnight calls, passengers are staying longer. Committee members urged the development of experiences that encourage longer stays and improvements to reception capacity so that increased visitor numbers translate into local spending.

A home port refers to the port where cruise passengers board or disembark, serving as the cruise’s origin or destination.

An “overnight” call is when a cruise stays in port for one night or longer.

The committee also reviewed key elements of the five-year plan that will guide Incheon’s cruise industry over the next five years.

Experts offered recommendations on priority tasks, including strategic marketing to attract cruise lines, creating distinctive tourism content, enhancing passenger reception capacity, and building a sustainable cruise industry ecosystem.

They also recommended fostering a virtuous cycle by developing locally tailored tourism products and supporting related industries in the medium to long term, so the cruise sector can become a new growth engine for the regional economy.

Deputy Mayor for Global City Affairs Shin Jae-kyung said, “Incheon is at a pivotal moment to turn surging cruise demand into an opportunity to emerge as a Northeast Asian cruise hub. Based on the experts’ recommendations from this committee, we will continue strengthening our tourism reception capacity and content.”
