Eric Lu, the winner of last year’s Chopin International Piano Competition — widely regarded as one of the three most prestigious piano contests in the world — will appear on stage in Daegu.

Dalseo Art Center will present a recital by pianist Eric Lu at Cheongryong Hall on Wednesday the 13th at 7:30 p.m. The concert is the second installment of the DSAC Signature Series, the center’s program showcasing leading domestic and international artists.

Lu captured first prize at the 19th Chopin International Piano Competition last year and has since been hailed as a new major figure in contemporary pianism. Critics point to his controlled emotional range, precise touch, and refined technique. He has been building his international profile with appearances alongside major orchestras such as the London Symphony and the Chicago Symphony.

This recital offers an opportunity to hear Lu’s solo artistry in depth after his competition win. Known for interpreting composers’ intentions with careful attention while applying a modern sensibility, his readings of Romantic repertoire by Chopin, Schumann and Schubert are expected to reveal an increasingly distinct musical voice.

The program opens with Schumann’s Scenes from the Forest, then moves to Chopin’s Polonaise No. 2 and Ballade No. 4, pieces that showcase the splendor of Romanticism. In the second half, Lu will perform Schubert’s Impromptu No. 1, highlighting lyrical structural beauty, and conclude with the recital’s centerpiece, Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3.

Lee Seong-wook, director of Dalseo Art Center, said the concert distills the deepened musical world Lu has developed since winning the Chopin competition and will give audiences a chance to experience firsthand the energy of a young artist shaping contemporary pianism.

The DSAC Signature Series is Dalseo Art Center’s flagship program for inviting top-tier artists from home and abroad. The lineup continues with Yekwon Sunwoo in May, Rafal Blechacz in July, the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in September, and Mao Fujita in October.
