Reports that prosecutors have taken up rape charges against one of South Korea’s leading male musical theater actors sent shockwaves through the industry.
On March 11, a local outlet reported that musical actor A — identified only by an initial — was investigated by police on allegations of sexually assaulting a woman and has been referred to prosecutors. Seoul’s Bangbae Police Station transferred the case last month to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on charges of rape by force.
Police say the alleged incident occurred in Seoul last year, and that the woman identified as B escaped the scene and called 112, South Korea’s emergency number.
A denied the allegations during police questioning, according to reports, but investigators judged the accusations credible and forwarded the case to prosecutors. Authorities have not released any identifying information about A.
