[EPN Enpinow reporter Gonari] Netflix has announced a new Korean young-adult (YA) horror series, Girigo.
Girigo follows a group of high school students who, after using a cursed wish-granting mobile application called Girigo, begin receiving sudden death notices and must fight to survive.
The series leverages the striking premise of an app that demands death as payment to probe the fears and anxieties of teenagers. It builds tension by grounding its scares in real-world pressures—friendship conflicts, family strife, academic stress, and the confusion of identity formation.
Much of the drama springs from a chain of unsettling events in which troubled teens confront an unknown terror, a setup that encourages deeper emotional investment in the characters rather than relying on jump scares alone.
Girigo also continues Netflix’s ongoing pattern of introducing new talent both in front of and behind the camera, following shows such as All of Us Are Dead and Sweet Home.
Director Park Yun-seo said, "The script felt fresh, so I wanted to work with promising new actors to capture its specific atmosphere."
The series features newcomers Jeon So-young, Kang Mina, Baek Sun-ho, Hyun Woo-seok, and Lee Hyo-je as high school students, each with distinct backstories and personalities.
Jeon So-young leads as Se-a, while Kang Mina (Nari), Baek Sun-ho (Geon-woo), Hyun Woo-seok (Ha-jun), and Lee Hyo-je (Hyeong-uk) portray students dealing with unique circumstances.
Park previously worked as a B-director on Netflix's Kingdom Season 2 and co-directed the drama Moving, and Girigo marks her first project as the lead director.
Park added, "I wanted viewers to experience the characters' fear alongside them," and she emphasized a commitment to realism through techniques such as first-person perspectives and body-cam-style shots.
Girigo will premiere on Netflix on April 24.
