‘왕과 사는 남자’ Hits 13 Million: How This Historical Drama Became a Box Office Sensation

The Man Who Lives with the King has surpassed 13 million admissions.

On the 15th, Showbox, the film’s distributor, announced via social media that, thanks to the movie’s fans, cumulative admissions had topped 13 million as of 9 a.m.

Among domestic releases that have exceeded 10 million admissions, The Man Who Lives with the King has now surpassed the totals of The Thieves (2012; 12.98 million), Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013; 12.81 million) and Assassination (2015; 12.70 million), moving up to 11th on the all-time Korean box office list. It sits just behind 10th-place The Host (2006; 13.01 million) and is expected to enter the top 10 later today.

The film is the eighth highest-grossing Korean movie overall and the second-highest-grossing historical drama, trailing only Roaring Currents (2014; 17.61 million). It has overtaken Masquerade (2012; 12.31 million) and The King and the Clown (2005; 12.30 million).

Released on the 4th of last month, The Man Who Lives with the King reached 10 million admissions on its 31st day (the 6th), passed 12 million on its 36th day (the 11th), and reached 13 million today.

Directed by Jang Hang-jun, The Man Who Lives with the King follows the exiled Danjong, Yi Hong-wi (Park Ji-hoon), who spends his final days in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province living among villagers, including village headman Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hae-jin).
