(The CEN News / Reporter Kang Hyun-bin) HBO Max amped up anticipation with the release of the trailer and premiere date for its Harry Potter reboot.
HBO unveiled the official trailer and premiere date for its new series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The show is set to debut on HBO Max on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 — moved up from an originally projected 2027 launch.
The trailer captures Harry’s life with the Dursleys and the abuse he endures, cousin Dudley’s bullying, his first meeting with Hagrid, a visit to Diagon Alley, and Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross. It also reimagines hallmark moments — the arrival at Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat, dorm life and Quidditch — signaling a more detailed, serialized approach than the films.
Billed as a full reboot, the series features an entirely new cast. Dominic McLaughlin is set to play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take on Ron Weasley. John Rissgo is tapped for Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will play Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost has been cast as Hagrid.
The casting of Papa Essiedu as Severus Snape has sparked debate. Some critics have praised it as a bold reinterpretation, while others argue it departs from the late Alan Rickman’s indelible screen image.
Hans Zimmer is composing the score, and J.K. Rowling is listed as an executive producer. The series is planned as a long-term project, adapting each of the seven original novels into its own season and aiming to explore storylines the films couldn’t fully cover.
Viewers can expect a richer depiction of how Harry, Ron and Hermione forge their bond at Hogwarts and ultimately confront Voldemort.
