[MyDaily = Reporter Park Seoyeon] Comedian Kim Jun-hyun, who formed the project "Amutta Band" and has demonstrated notable musical ability, recently became a full member of the Korea Music Performers Association (hereafter the Association).
According to sources, composer Jo Young-soo — a member of Amutta Band and a long-standing Association member — encouraged Kim to join. Coming on the heels of a wave of actors signing up, the move signals that comedians are increasingly asserting their rights as music performers.
The Association is the country's only copyright trust-management organization that manages neighboring rights for music performers, including singers and instrumentalists. Kim showcased strong instrumental and vocal skills when Amutta Band released a digital single, and by joining the Association he will secure legal protections and compensation for future uses of his music on broadcasts and digital platforms.
Where comedians' record releases were once treated as one-off stunts or novelty acts, recent projects increasingly match the quality and sincerity of professional musicians.
The Association already counts many top-class comedians among its members — including national MC Yoo Jae-seok, Kim Sook, Cho Hye-ryun, Hong Hyun-hee, Yoon Hyung-bin, Yang Se-hyung, and Yoo Se-yoon. Groups such as Celeb Five (Song Eun-i, Shin Bong-sun, Kim Shin-young, and Ahn Young-mi) have further solidified their musical identities by performing together, making the label "music performer" increasingly familiar to comedians.
The reasons they turn to the Association are clear. As streaming services and global OTT platforms expand, music is used in many more contexts, and building a fair compensation system for works they participated in has become an essential process for performing artists.
Kim Seung-min, the Association's executive director, said, "We've seen a noticeable rise in membership inquiries from comedians, including Kim Jun-hyun. This reflects a borderless era in which the boundaries of popular culture are breaking down."
He added, "As awareness of performers' rights spreads from actors to comedians, our association will continue to refine rights-management systems to meet changing usage environments and strengthen the foundations for meaningful compensation so artists can focus on creating."
Kim Jun-hyun's membership is likely to set a positive precedent for many comedians who pursue music alongside careers in other fields. Beyond simple membership, it could serve as a catalyst for comedians to be recognized as professionals in music — a central strand of popular culture — and to secure their legal rights.
