The new SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Sold Out Again Today, which premieres April 22 (Wed), follows perfectionist farmer Matthew Lee (aka Mechuri) and show host Dam Ye-jin, a live-commerce personality obsessed with selling out. As their lives become entangled around the clock, the series delivers a seasonal, heartfelt romance centered on modern-day hustlers.
Ahn describes the show as “healing.” “A woman who had been charging forward like a racehorse meets a man from the countryside,” he said. “She learns to slow down, and he, by meeting her, begins to open up and heal his own wounds. I hope viewers feel comforted watching our characters go through that process.”
Asked about the drama’s biggest strength, Ahn pointed to its clarity and emotional honesty. “When we show the characters’ wounds, we dig in deeply and treat them seriously. Because this is a romantic comedy, we couldn’t let it feel superficial. At the same time, we committed to the laughs — I pushed the comedy so much that you could almost call this a ‘comedy romance’ rather than just a romantic comedy.”
Known for his warm, lively comic touch on the drama Gangmaegang, Ahn said his directing approach prioritizes atmosphere. “I don’t rely on one trick. I focus on creating a comfortable set. When actors feel truly at ease, they can fully bring out their charm and tackle the big task of delivering comedy. Technical shots and editing rhythms come after that.”
On why romantic comedy works, Ahn emphasized that the genre highlights an actor’s personal appeal. “The most memorable films and shows that make audiences laugh and cry are anchored by lovable, compelling characters. To achieve that, you have to capture the actors’ human charm.”
Ahn also praised his cast — Ahn Hyo-seop (Matthew Lee), Chae Won-bin (Dam Ye-jin) and Kim Beom (Seo Eric) — noting strong chemistry. “On Sold Out Again Today, the characters and the actors match 90% or more. My aim was to let actors be themselves on screen, and I think we succeeded.”
Speaking specifically about Ahn Hyo-seop, who gained global attention with K-Pop Demon Hunters, Ahn said, “I fell for him while working on this drama. He’s a great person, and beneath his serious side is a strong comedic instinct. I hope viewers see a prepared, fresh comedic side of Ahn Hyo-seop in our show.”
Finally, Ahn invited viewers to savor the cast. “We crafted every role with care — from the cute, lovable leads to the charming supporting players. Please watch and appreciate each character.”
Thanks to Ahn Jong-yeon’s warmth and attention, the new SBS drama Sold Out Again Today premieres April 22 (Wed) at 9 p.m.
