On April 6, Namwon announced it will expand perks for solo and small-group travelers as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization’s "April Travel Month" campaign, with the goal of encouraging longer stays.

First up: a 50% discount on tourist taxi fares to ease travel to attractions that are tough to reach by public transit. The idea is to make it simpler for independent visitors to explore Namwon at their own pace. The city is also offering reduced admission to the popular Piorium attraction to help cut overall trip costs.

Namwon is rolling out rail-linked incentives, too. From April through May, the city will run a bold support program for travelers using Korail’s free-travel package aimed at depopulated areas.

Tourists who visit Namwon with that package can get a full refund of their train fare in the form of coupons, which makes rail travel practically free.

The city will also launch programs designed to boost local spending and extend stays. New sign-ups for the Namwon Digital Tourist Resident Card will receive Namwon specialty products as a welcome gift to encourage participation.

“We designed these policies around tangible benefits that visitors will actually notice,” a city official said. “We hope they draw more tourists and breathe new life into the local economy.”

The perks don’t stop there. Ahead of the 96th Chunhyang Festival, opening April 30, Namwon will open temporary car-camping sites free of charge for overnight car campers from across the country and is accepting advance reservations.

The temporary car-camping sites include three locations: the jokgu (Korean foot-volleyball) and soccer field parking lots at the Comprehensive Sports Town, and the parking area at the Hampau Sound Experience Center.

The sites can handle roughly 220 vehicles at once, from RVs to standard cars. With easy access and attractive surroundings, they should appeal to families and experienced campers alike. Because these areas are temporary uses of parking lots, no on-site cooking facilities will be provided.

To minimize inconvenience, the city will operate shower facilities at the Comprehensive Sports Town and keep existing restrooms open at all times to maintain hygiene.

To use the limited space efficiently, bookings are limited to one site per person. You can apply online via the Chunhyang Festival official website until 6 p.m. on April 24. If slots remain unfilled during the reservation period, on-site registration will be available for any remaining spaces during the festival.

Namwon's signature festival: the Chunhyang Festival

The Chunhyang Festival, one of Namwon’s signature events and among Korea’s longest-running festivals, will dazzle the city this spring. Launched in 1931 during the Japanese colonial era, it began as a grassroots effort to boost national pride and honor Seong Chunhyang’s noble spirit. Over its 96-year history, the festival has become a cherished cultural treasure closely tied to the community.

This year’s program is built around four themes—grace, resolve, love, and tradition—each offering a different way to experience the Chunhyang story. The "grace" segment celebrates Chunhyang’s outward beauty for audiences near and far.

Highlights include a global Chunhyang Selection Contest, a Chunhyang Beauty Zone where visitors can step into the tale, and a nighttime Gwanghallu light-and-art display called "Chunhyang Album: Illustration Exhibition" that reimagines the story in contemporary visual form. Ambassador Chunhyang and hanbok master Kim Hye-sun will also appear in a Chunhyang Hanbok Fashion Show.

“Resolve” focuses on Chunhyang’s inner strength and invites citizens to help shape that legacy. Events include Chunhyang Jehyang, which elevates her values through art by citizens and past Chunhyang representatives, and the Chunhyang Carnival, a national parade that tells her story through themed storytelling.

The festival will also stage a Chunhyang one-act changgeuk—a modern take on traditional Korean opera—to showcase her spirit and courage. A Joseon-era storyteller will deliver Chunhyang’s determined tale in a humorous monologue format.

“Love” gives visitors a chance to experience Chunhyang and Mongryong’s romance through performances like the Chunhyang Love Dance and the Chunmong Love Story. There’s also a charity Love Run organized with childhood cancer and leukemia groups to support new life—Korea’s top charity runner Sean is expected to take part.

Under “Tradition,” the program features the Chunhyang National Gugak Competition, performances by master Gwanghallu vocalists, Chunhyang rap and pansori shows, and a Gwanghallu lantern procession open to residents and tourists.

Beyond those programs, the festival offers a lively food zone, performances, and hands-on experiences. The Chunhyang Festival runs from April 30 to May 6. Far from just a local celebration, Namwon’s Chunhyang Festival brings the beloved classic The Tale of Chunhyang to life, promising visitors an unforgettable spring memory.
