This year’s festival, themed “Arirang, Beyond Time to the Future,” offered 38 programs—performances, exhibitions, hands-on experiences, competitions, and after-dark events. Organizers blended deep-rooted traditions with a modern edge, earning praise as a festival where heritage and the future coexist.

The showstopper was undoubtedly the Miryang River Odyssey, “Samyeong, Goes to the World.” Framed by Yeongnamru and the Miryang River, the production paired drone choreography, special effects, and a massive cast for a truly breathtaking spectacle.

As the performance began, the riverbanks and floodplains filled with spectators. The night sky’s light display drew audible gasps and a steady stream of camera flashes.

Nighttime crowds were especially notable, prompting many to say the Miryang River Odyssey has become Miryang’s signature after-dark attraction.

Even after the finale, people stayed along the riverfront well into the night, keeping the festival’s energy alive.

The festival went beyond staged performances. The Arirang theme pavilion, a UNESCO diaspora exhibition, the National Unity Arirang, the Miryang Arirang competition, and street parades all reconnected audiences with Arirang’s historical weight and global reach. Family-friendly workshops and generational participation programming added lively, hands-on moments across the grounds.

Most importantly, this year demonstrated real potential for overnight tourism. Visitors naturally moved from daytime exhibitions and interactive events to large-scale evening performances and illuminated nightscapes, which noticeably lengthened their stays.

During the festival, guests flocked to the riverside food zone and food trucks, downtown shops, and booths selling local agricultural products. Increased demand for lodging injected fresh energy into the local economy. Observers noted the festival has evolved beyond a quick “see-and-go” event into a tourism-driven celebration that links spending with extended stays.

The event also stood out as a citizen-led festival. Local artists, youth groups, volunteers, citizen actors, and civic organizations all took active roles in running events and performing, becoming the festival’s beating heart. Attendees felt the communal energy of a celebration created by the community itself.

A city official said, “This festival was a meaningful time that showcased both the value of traditional culture and Miryang’s potential as a stay-over tourism city. Going forward, we will continue to develop Miryang Arirang into South Korea’s flagship cultural tourism festival, energizing the local economy and tourism industry.”
