The Eldorado Express departed Pohang passenger terminal at 9:50 a.m. on the 10th and went into full service as Ulleung's tourist season opened. Slicing across the East Sea as it left port, the vessel is being hailed as a next‑generation ferry that pairs blistering speed with big‑ship comfort.
Weighing in at 3,158 metric tons, the Eldorado Express is roughly ten times the size of conventional high‑speed ferries, offering both speed and stability. Based on Australian shipbuilder Incat’s specialized catamaran design with wave‑piercing technology, it minimizes roll even at top speeds of 51 knots (about 59 mph / 95 km/h). On its trial run, the vessel covered the roughly 117‑mile (188 km) route between Pohang and Ulleung in just 2 hours 50 minutes. By cutting a journey that once took 4–5 hours by nearly half, Ulleung is now effectively within reach for day trips or half‑day getaways.
Onboard amenities have been upgraded to near‑airline standards. The ship's 970 seats are arranged in economy, business, and first classes and feature premium Norwegian seats to reduce fatigue on longer voyages.
