Homyeong Lake in Gapyeong, often likened to Baekdusan’s Cheonji for its crater-like beauty, is reopening after its winter break.
On March 10, Gapyeong County announced the lake, tucked into the slopes of Homyeongsan in Cheongpyeong-myeon, will reopen on March 16.
The county closes Homyeong Lake every winter for safety reasons and reopens it from mid-March through November. Sitting near the 632 m (2,073 ft) summit of Homyeongsan, the lake is actually an artificial upper reservoir created for the Cheongpyeong pumped-storage power plant — Korea’s first of its kind.
Built to store water for power generation, the lake’s natural mountain backdrop creates a stunning scene. It’s ranked the No. 2 spot among Gapyeong’s nine must-see views.
An octagonal pavilion floating on the water offers picture-perfect views of clear water and blue skies, while across the shore you get sweeping panoramas of Cheongpyeong Lake.
A roughly 1.9 km (about 1.2 miles) loop around the lake features snack stands and a lookout. The path is bike-friendly, so you can pedal along or hike from the summit down to the lakeshore.
Starting March 16, a route bus linking Sangcheon Station to Homyeong Lake will run to improve traffic safety, protect the natural environment and ease parking congestion. Drivers are asked to park in the Homyeong Lake parking lot, then take the route bus or walk to the lake.
During the peak months (April, May, October and November), the county will increase bus service to make visiting more convenient — boosting daily runs from 10 to 16.
Homyeong Lake is an easy day trip from the Seoul metro area since visitors can reach Sangcheon Station by train, and admission is free. Those conveniences helped draw about 70,000 visitors to Homyeong Lake in 2025.
