Short-haul international travel surged by 2,634,465 passengers in the first quarter compared with a year earlier. According to the Aviation Information Portal System, 14,384,773 passengers flew short-haul international routes in Q1 — a 22.4% increase from 11,750,308 in the same period last year. Over the same period, long-haul travel rose by only about 140,000 passengers. Korean Air said first-quarter passenger revenue on its Japan routes rose 12% year-on-year, while revenue on China routes climbed 19%. Asiana Airlines reported increases of 9 percentage points on Japan routes and 12 percentage points on China routes compared with last year. Jeju Air carried 1,233,400 passengers to Japan in Q1, more than 300,000 up from 915,900 a year earlier, and its China passengers rose from 100,600 to 134,700. Jin Air added roughly 140,000 Japan passengers, and T’way Airlines added about 364,000. Some analysts say recent developments in the Middle East could push short-haul international travel even higher.
