The former Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute in Cheongpyeong—often called Gapyeong’s hidden "cherry blossom shrine"—is opening its gates to the public again this spring.
On the 3rd, the county announced the site will be temporarily open to residents and visitors from the 11th through the 26th.
This is the seventh time the county has opened the inland research institute since 2023.
Once off-limits to the public, the scenic research site has become a must-see after word spread about its beauty: more than 26,000 people visited last spring and again during the autumn foliage season. Officials say it’s fast becoming one of Gapyeong’s newest tourist draws.
■ From horseback rides to a farmers’ market — a fuller lineup of events
This year’s program is bigger and more varied. In the first week, visitors can try a newly introduced horseback-riding experience for a fun, unexpected perspective. There will also be live busking acts that amplify the spring vibe, a (social media) check-in event, a fish-feeding activity for kids, and a direct-sales market where local farmers sell fresh produce—plenty of family-friendly options to enjoy.
■ Easier parking and top-notch safety measures
The county has planned for crowds with improved parking options. Visitors can use the Cheongpyeong-myeon No. 2 public parking lot free for two hours, and the Cheongpyeong Catholic Church parking lot will be open Monday through Saturday.
A Gapyeong County official said, "We will make safety our top priority so every visitor can have a comfortable, enjoyable time on the research institute's cherry blossom path," adding, "We will continue developing distinctive programs to attract more tourists to Gapyeong."
