Park Jin-young (54), the co-chair of the Pop Culture Exchange Committee, will step down from his position as an inside director at JYP Entertainment, the company he founded.
JYP Entertainment announced on the 10th that it will not nominate Park for reappointment as an inside director at its annual shareholders’ meeting scheduled for the 26th.
The company said Park plans to concentrate on creative work as an artist, mentoring younger talent, and pursuing new external initiatives to support the wider K-pop industry.
Park debuted as a singer in 1994 and expanded his influence in K-pop as a songwriter and producer. He founded JYP Entertainment in 1997 and has served as an inside director since 2011.
JYP did not provide specific reasons for the decision, but industry observers say Park is likely to devote more time to the Pop Culture Exchange Committee, which he has co-chaired since last September.
Park will, however, remain JYP’s chief creative officer.
JYP said Park will continue various activities aimed at advancing the development of the K-pop industry.
