Yangpyeong Cultural Foundation (Chair Park Shin-sun) announced on May 11 that it will present the J.P. Jofre Quintet at 3 p.m. on the 30th at the Mulbit Theater in Yangpyeong Library. The concert is part of the foundation’s 2026 season, an intergenerational series titled "Yangpyeong Empathy."
The program features a quintet led by J.P. Jofre, an Argentine-born bandoneon virtuoso and composer whose work erases the line between contemporary classical music and tango.
Based in New York, Jofre has earned international acclaim, including nominations for the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium and the Latin Grammy for Best Classical Composition. He is regularly featured by major outlets such as The New York Times and is regarded by Lincoln Center as one of today’s leading artists.
The J.P. Jofre Quintet brings together top Korean musicians to join Jofre on stage. The program includes eight pieces, from his early work "Universe" to his latest compositions. The ensemble blends tango’s raw intensity with modern chamber-music frameworks, producing music that is at once lyrical and taut—shaped by the bandoneon’s breath-like phrasing and the dense textures of chamber performance.
The centerpiece of the concert is "The Fifth Season," which Jofre composed in 2020 while staying in Yangpyeong during the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the region’s natural beauty, the work offers a glimpse of how local landscapes can be transmuted into art by a world-class musician.
Park Shin-sun, chair of the Yangpyeong Cultural Foundation, said, “We’re honored to present a world-class artist’s performance to local residents. We will continue to offer high-quality programs that resonate across generations.”
The concert is free and open to anyone aged 8 and older. It runs about 65 minutes. Advance reservations will be accepted on the Yangpyeong Cultural Foundation’s official website from the 19th through the 22nd. For more details, visit the foundation’s website.
