Unlocking the Future of Media: What 727 Billion KRW Investment Means for Personalized Content

By Seon Seul-gi, Digital Today — The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission announced on April 30 that it selected eight new projects under the Digital Media Innovation Technology Development Project. The program will invest 72.7 billion KRW (about $54.53 million) in broadcast-media research and development through 2030.

The commission launched the initiative to spur innovation in South Korea’s broadcasting and media sector and to bolster its technological competitiveness amid changing media habits—like the rise of online video services (OTT)—and mounting global competition. This year, the new projects will receive a total of 7.9 billion KRW (about $5.93 million) in funding.

The Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) handled the project selection. IITP reworked and consolidated 14 previously small-scale, fragmented broadcasting-media R&D efforts into this unified program, which is intended to serve as the flagship broadcasting-media R&D initiative going forward.

The program is organized into three tracks: core technologies for intelligent media production; core technologies for My Media platforms; and AI agent technologies for personalized media services.

SBS will lead the intelligent media production track, developing AI tools that support the full production pipeline from content planning through editing. The work will pursue three subprojects to build conversational, multimodal AI production technologies capable of processing text, images, audio and video together. Separately, Gom & Company will lead a project to develop lightweight, collaborative production tools and real-time visualization technologies.

Jemernai Soft will oversee the My Media platform track, carrying out three subprojects: automated personalized video generation, AI persona models, and AI models specialized for broadcast-media metadata. AdOne will lead the AI agent technology track, aiming to develop intelligent agent technologies that discover, recommend and assemble content based on user preferences and context.
