TV CHOSUN’s new weekend miniseries Doctor Shin (written by Phoebe [Im Seong-han]) premieres at 10:30 p.m. on the 14th. The medical thriller follows a brilliant surgeon who pushes the limits of medicine and a woman whose brain suddenly begins to fail, leaving her dangerously close to losing herself.
Jeong I-chan steps into his first leading role since debut as Shin Ju-shin, a neurosurgeon whose surgical skill verges on the supernatural. Song Ji-in undergoes a striking transformation to play Hyun Ran-hee, a gallery director and the mother of Momo (Baek Seo-ra).
In a scene designed to command attention, Shin Ju-shin (Jeong) and Hyun Ran-hee (Song) have a charged exchange at the pool — the show’s signature “sudden pool encounter.” Shin speaks with his trademark unemotional expression, while Hyun answers with a bright, disarming smile.
Hyun’s startled response to a single line from Shin intensifies the scene. The image of the two women and men — draped in robes over swimsuits and locked in a serious conversation — creates an eerie, suspenseful mood that raises questions about their relationship, especially given Hyun’s role as the mother of Shin’s love interest.
Jeong and Song delivered focused, immersive performances for what has become a Phoebe hallmark. To amplify the odd intimacy of the open pool setting, they rehearsed extensively before filming. Behind the scenes, sources say the pair carefully mapped out the psychological give-and-take and the characters’ subtle emotional shifts, which elevated the scene’s impact.
The production team urged viewers to tune in, saying the signature sequence alone heightens curiosity and hints at bold narrative turns in Phoebe’s first medical thriller, Doctor Shin.
